Passages

, 2: 185.

This entry discusses thar 'jug. 'Ba' ra ba begins his lengthy chapter on the triratna by discussing the defining characteristics of each (based on Uttaratantra {116081}: Buddha [186.2]; Dharma [188.2] and Saṅgha [191.4]). Then, he follows this with a discussion of the don dam pa'i skyabs gnas [193.6] which is sangs rgyas nyan gcig [196.4]; in this section he provides a cogent summary [195.2] of the divisions of chos into lung and rtogs, further subdiving the latter into rgyu'i chos (lam gyis bden pa) and 'bras bu'i chos ('gog pa'i bden pa). After this comes a section on the nang, gsang ba and de kho na nyid kyi skyabs su 'gro [199.6].

, 1: 402.

After distinguishing between the cause determined and goal sustained ways of taking refuge (see Yon tan mdzod rtsa ba {115776:43} and Yon tan rin po che mdzod kyi 'grel pa nyi zla'i sgron me {116381:v1:534.3} for passages from the root text), 'Jigs med gling pa goes on to distinguish between the three types of motivation for taking refuge in accordance with the classical distinction between three types of person (see skyes bu gsum). This follows Klong chen pa's Sems nyid ngal gso {116036} and its autocommentary Shing rta chen po {116031}.

, 1: 338.

In commenting on the last cited verse, 'Jigs med gling pa begins by interpreting the many epithets of the "Buddha" in order to elaborate on the special external capabilities of the Buddha.

  • Three Jewels. The Precious Buddha, the Precious Dharma and the Precious Sangha. In The Light of Wisdom (Shambhala Publ.), Jamgön Kongtrül explains: The Buddha is the nature of the four kayas and five wisdoms endowed with the twofold purity and the perfection of the twofold welfare. The Dharma is what is expressed, the unconditioned truth of total purification comprised of cessation and path, and that which expresses, the two aspects of statement and realization appearing as the names, words and letters of the teachings. The Sangha consists of the actual Sangha, the sons of the victorious ones abiding on the noble bhumis who are endowed with the qualities of wisdom and liberation, and the resembling Sangha who are on the paths of accumulation and joining as well as the noble shravakas and pratyekabuddhas.
