In this passage, Rong zom describes the superior path as a spontaneous attunement to natural freedom (rang bzhin gyi grol) or being free in freedom (grol ba grol). For more on this, see under the term lam chen po.

, 168.3.

In distinguishing Rdzogs chen as the summit of all ways, Rong zom first discusses [167.6] the ways to freedom on different Buddhist paths. He discusses the Śrāvakas, who state that freedom arises via emancipation from causes and conditions and samādhi through which they abide in a state involving an objective reference. Then he discussed the Pratyekabuddhas, who state that freedom arises via emancipation from path of words and samādhi through which they abide in the way of ineffable reality. After that he discusses the Mahāyāna path which teaches that freedom arises via primordial awareness which is emancipated from divisive notions born of subjective grasping and a samādhi through which they engage in the utterly diaphanous dimension of meaningfulness). Finally, he discusses the Mantra(yāna) path which teaches that freedom and samādhi are indivisible and they experience the three diamond like aspects. For a full entry, see under the term lam.

Among the ten seminal distinctions (shan 'byed) Yon tan rgya mtsho adopts as a framework for discussing the essentials of Rdzogs chen philosophy. He includes the distinction concerning the gist of the freedom mode (grol tshul). Here, mind (sems) is classified in terms of the five elemental forces and contrasted with sems nyid. See under sems nyid.
