In this passage, Yang dgon pa compares the "all at once" approach to the sun rising over a narrow ravine. In the same way that the sun instantaneously and simultaneously illumines the darkness, warms the earth and melts the frost, so in the individual who receives the revitalizing inspiration of a qualified Guru, stability, felt experiences and deep understanding arise all at once. The gradual approach is likened to the sun over bad terrain which only illumines the darkness slightly and is unable to warm the earth or melt the frost. Therefore stability, felt experiences, and deep understanding arise bit by bit. Finally, the "leaps and bounds" approach is likened to sun covered by clouds which intermittently part to allow brief periods of illumination.
