Note

This passage concerns different ways to classify vehicles. Klong chen pa discusses different ways of enumerating classifying the yānas (Buddhist and non-Buddhist) which are actually "as limitless as the endeavours of the human mind" (Laṅkāvatāra {116361}). Later [59.5] Klong chen pa criticizes "those who with narrow mindedness and near-sighted vision become obsessed with one perspective and declare that an exposition of inconceivable number of spiritual pursuits and classes of philosophical systems are "intimidating" or "unreal" in the belief that just as livestock such as cattle and buffalos need fences, so for gods and men, (the various vehicles and philosophies) are merely fences". Such a view must be rejected, however, for the exceedingly varied (and at times seemingly contradictory) teachings are intended to meet the differing interests and abilities of living beings. "Once one abandons the distorted view that finds the ocean of ways of spiritual living to be oppressive or frightening, then one can engage in the quest for what matters in life, this is the true guidance". The following are some ways the yānas have been classified in Buddhist literature [56.1 f].
