Note
In discussing the classification of sems bskyed into six in accordance with the six pāramitās, 'Jigs med gling pa quotes the 'Phags pa dad pa'i stobs bskyed pa {116331} on the meaning of thabs and shes rab and provides commentary.
by David Higgins
Note
On 487.5, 'Jigs med gling pa notes that the first five pāramitās (summarized as thabs) are the cause of happiness and still involve delusion, whereas shes rab is the cause of liberation.

Note
Sgam po pa uses the analogy of a Tibetan guitar to illustrate the meaning of the interrelatedness of insight and action. Just as the sound of a guitar arises not from the strings alone or the sound hole alone but from the specific combination of such factors, so goal realization does not arise from thabs alone or shes rab alone but from their comibination. Note
After discussing the pāramitās as they are practiced in Mantrayāna, 'Jigs med gling pa raises critical questions concerning why and for whom the thabs aspects are necessary. His discussion indicates the complementarity between the two and the need for balancing them in one's view and praxis.

means and knowledge; Skt. prajna and upaya. Buddhahood is attained by uniting means and knowledge; in Mahayana, compassion and emptiness, relative and ultimate bodhichitta. In Vajrayana, means and knowledge are the stages of development and completion. According to the Kagyü schools, means refers specifically to the 'path of means,' the Six Doctrines of Naropa and knowledge to the 'path of liberation,' the actual practice of Mahamudra. According to Dzogchen, 'knowledge' is the view of primordial purity, the Trekchö practice of realizing the heart of enlightenment in the present moment, while 'means' is the meditation of spontaneous presence, the Tögal practice of exhausting defilements and fixation through which the rainbow body is realized within one lifetime
