Close transmission. This refers to a particular type of transmission of a religious teaching. The term contrasts to a “long transmission” (ring brgyud), where a teaching is passed through a lengthy succession of masters. In a “close transmission” or “short transmission,” the recipient has greater proximity to the source of the teachings (and by implication has a greater mastery of them). “Short transmission” is often used in reference to the discovery of treasure-texts (gter ma), or to teachings that are received in vision. In these cases, the doctrine is suggested to come directly from its original source.
