A fumigation ritual, or smoke offering. A popular ritual activity that involves burning juniper (or other branches) to create smoke. The bsang ritual appears to be an indigenous Tibetan activity, based on the concept that humans’ presence and activities defile the environment, and that this impurity can be removed with fumigation. The basic function of the ritual is thus “to purify” (bsang ba), a verb that refers to purifying through fumigation, in contrast to gtsang ba, which is to purify or cleanse with water. The bsang ritual is also associated with Indian Buddhist incense offerings, and thus is one of the most common Buddhist ritual activities, where it is conceived as an offering to divinities. In Tibet there is also a custom of offering bsang when an important person such as a lama arrives in an area.
